The headline highlights one DUI arrest and 16 citations. The body supplies a fuller set of numbers. In its September 8 release, the Fort Walton Beach Police Department described a September 5 checkpoint on U.S. Highway 98 at St. Mary’s Avenue SW and reported 215 vehicles checked. [1]

The department’s published totals

The release lists 16 uniform traffic citations, three criminal citations, one DUI arrest, and four other arrests. It also says approximately 805 vehicles were westbound on U.S. 98 during the checkpoint. These are the department’s figures, not totals independently reconstructed by The Salty Rag. [1]

Vehicles passing the area, vehicles checked, citations, and arrests are different measures. A citation total should not be treated as a count of unique drivers without more detail. Nor does the number checked, by itself, show why any particular vehicle was selected.

The claim goes beyond the tally

Chief Robert Bage’s quoted explanation emphasizes deterrence: the department wanted publicity and visibility to discourage impaired driving. The second page continues that explanation and identifies assisting organizations. A one-image clipping would lose part of the department’s stated rationale. [1]

The release does not provide a before-and-after crash analysis or a comparison operation. Its counts describe reported enforcement activity during this checkpoint; they do not, on their own, measure the number of crashes prevented. That distinction is about what the document can demonstrate, not a finding that the operation did or did not work.
