The data flow, in plain language.

How the website handles information
ActionWhat the site does
Read a pageLoads the page, scripts, and artwork from the same site. The website has no analytics tags, advertising trackers, remote fonts, or tracking pixels.
SearchMatches your query against an on-device index. It does not send the query to a search provider. A search-page query can remain in the address bar, browser history, or a copied link. Reloading or following a URL containing that query can send it to the host as part of the request.
Save a storyStores article identifiers in this browser’s local storage. It does not create an account or sync a reading list to the newsroom.
Change article type sizeStores the chosen size locally when browser storage is available. It can still work for the session if storage is blocked.
Prepare a messageKeeps form entries in the current page. The website does not automatically store a draft or submit it to a server.
Download or copy a draftCreates a text-file download or a clipboard copy only when requested. Those copies can remain on the device or in browser, clipboard, or backup tools outside this site.
Open an email draftAsks your email app to compose a message. You must review and send it there; the site does not send the email itself.
Newsletter signupEmail subscriptions are not open and no subscriber addresses are collected. RSS is available without registration.

What your device may remember.

The reading list uses saltyrag.saved.v1; the article-size preference uses saltyrag.type-size.v1. These are local-storage entries, not website cookies. They remain until you remove the relevant data or the browser clears it.

The controls below remove only this site’s saved-story list and text-size preference. They do not erase browser history, downloads, clipboard contents, mail drafts, provider logs, or messages you already sent.

Clear this site’s reading preferences.

This removes the saved-story list and resets the article text size in this browser. The action cannot restore a removed list.

Hosting and email.

The website runs on a Vultr server. Serving a page involves your IP address, request path, time, and browser information. Technical logs may be used to maintain availability, investigate errors, and protect the service. The site does not run analytics or advertising trackers.

Messages you choose to send to our address are delivered through Proton Mail and organized in our internal mail workspace. We use them to respond, assess story leads, or keep a record of corrections. Messages may be retained for those purposes; we have no fixed automatic deletion schedule. Contact us with questions or a deletion request.

Your email app, browser, and extensions may retain their own copies. External links lead to services with their own privacy practices.

A link to a public record, reference guide, or outside service takes you to another operator. Its own practices apply there. External content is linked rather than embedded in these reader-service pages, so opening the page does not load those providers merely to display a reference.

Use care with information you include in a message. This site is not a place to submit identification documents, passwords, payment credentials, or confidential-source files.

Questions, choices, and future changes.

You can read without creating an account, avoid the optional tools, remove local preferences, and decline to provide a reply address in an ordinary draft. The Contact page includes a privacy topic for questions .

Before sending a live newsletter, the publisher should make the promised confirmation and unsubscribe mechanisms work in practice. Material changes to data handling should be reflected here with a new review date. A later provider integration is not covered by an unreviewed promise on this site.
